Everybody assumes that a travel blogger literally does nothing but travel the world and blog about it. (Understandable given the title “travel blogger.”) But the truth is, most of us can’t travel all the time. Most travel bloggers have a home base or town that they spend most of the year in, and for newer travel bloggers, this is especially true.
So what does a travel blogger write about if they can’t travel?
Here are some travel blog post ideas for when you are uninspired and not going anywhere anytime soon. I’ve written about a lot of these myself, so I know they work!
Find Things to Write About in Your Town
Just because you think your hometown is boring, doesn’t mean everyone else does. Remember, you’ve seen it all before, but it’s a brand new place to millions of people all over the world. Use that!
Things you can write about include local places to eat, activities that are unique to your town, sights to see, anything that makes your city special! Some of the best travel blog post ideas can be found right under your nose if you get creative!
This is also a great way for you to promote local businesses and get people to travel to your hometown, which is a good thing!
List Your Travel Favorites
You’re a traveler, so you know what works when it comes to luggage, travel necessities, and even travel apps. Use your knowledge and experience to promote the things you love.
People who read your blog come to you for your unique knowledge, so tell them what they want to know! Show them what makes your trips easier, and they will thank you for it. Plus, it might even be a great way to land a brand sponsorship or get some affiliate income!

Create Posts About Blogging
You already know how to blog, or you wouldn’t be a travel blogger! Try to remember what you struggled with in the beginning but know now, and write a post about it. Even if you’re not an expert, you know more than someone who hasn’t started yet.
You could write about travel blogging specifically, or you could broaden the topic. There is so much to know about blogging. Creating a blog on WordPress, mastering SEO, choosing a niche, the possibilities are endless when it comes to what you could write about blogging!
Recycle/Update Old Blog Posts
If you aren’t creating new content, this is a great opportunity to update your old content. Just like tidying up your house, it has to be done. Sometimes it’s refreshing to go back to your old posts, add new links and clean up any mistakes, and you might even get some ideas for new posts.
Doing this can also save you from writing an entire new blog post if you don’t have the time. Just freshen up an old post by adding new information. Let your followers know that you’ve updated an old post. They may have never read it the first time, so it’s new to them!
Use Your Photos
I don’t know about you, but I take a million pictures when I go on a trip. There are plenty of pictures on my laptop that never see the light of day. If you feel like reminiscing and going back through some old vacation photos, create a photo diary of a place you’ve been to using pictures you never posted.
People are visual, and they love looking at pictures and videos. That’s why Instagram exists in the first place! I’m sure you have some gems hiding in your hard drive that you forgot to post, and your followers would probably love to see them!
Use Your Other Skills
As a blogger, you tend to develop other skills and specialties besides blogging. Write posts about other skills you have such as photography, freelance writing, Pinterest strategies, etc. This can even open up a new niche for you to write about if it’s something your readers are interested in and if it’s something you enjoy.
Take a Day Trip
If you are able to get out of the house, take a day trip to somewhere nearby! You don’t have to go to a big city or amusement park. Visit the nearest state park or smaller destinations and attractions. Not only does this give you something unique to write about, it helps support smaller local businesses!
If the weather is nice, spending some time outdoors exploring and hiking is also a fun option!
Plan a Trip
On the other hand, if you really can’t travel out of your town at all, plan a trip for the future when you can travel.
Make a list of things you want to do and see in a place that you’ve always wanted to visit. Then when you’re able to go, you’ll have some of the planning already done. If you know exactly when you want to take this future trip, try pitching to companies and hotels in that area for sponsorships!
Make a Bucket List
While you’re making lists of places to go, you might as well make a bucket list! Even if you write down things that you won’t be able to do for years, it still gives you a visual list of things to work toward.
Some people make one every year on New Year’s Day or on their birthday, but you don’t need a special occasion to write down your dreams!

Be Inspired by Other Bloggers
The best way to find out what travel bloggers write about is to read their blogs! Reading other travel blogs for inspiration is a great way to find ideas for articles. Of course, you shouldn’t copy what they write by any means, but following along with other bloggers can spark ideas for your own unique blog posts or even future trips. Plus, you might even connect with some travel bloggers who are stuck at home too!

I love these ideas! Especially useful right now when no one can travel. With all the time I suddenly have on my hands, I’m clearing my backlog of posts I want to write and then going back to update old posts. Always something to do!
I love this! During this time I have been revisiting old posts and organizing all of my photos (that I often don’t have time for)
Today as we are still allowed outside in Toronto, my partner and I went to a nearby town and did a hike. It’s great to get out in nature!
